URL Redirections

URL Forwarding (sometimes known as URL Redirection) is a technique which can be used to redirect a domain to another URL which is either too long or too hard to remember for a web user. The URL redirections types are represented by a numeric code say:301,302,303,410. These numbers refer to the HTTP Status Code returned by the server for a given URL.


Basic URL Redirection Types:
There are 4 types of URL Redirections:

  1. Permanent redirection: 301 -  A 301 redirect tells the search engine that the page has moved permanently to the new URL. The Search engines should change their index to use the new URL. When you redirect your pages, you should always use a 301 http server redirect. This tells the search engines that the redirect is permanent and that they should change their index to use the new URL. Spammers use other types of redirects (HTTP 302 redirects and meta refresh), so they are not a good idea to use.
  2. Temporary redirection: 302 – A 302 redirect tells the search engine that the move is only temporary, and you may decide to show content at the original location in the future without a redirect. The search engine should remove this URL from the index. Many spammers use 302 redirects to fool the search engines. HTTP 302 redirects are for temporary redirects. The only time you should use them is for redirecting ugly URLs to more user-friendly ones. This tells the search engine that the ugly URL should not be removed from the index, because the user-friendly URL is just to make the URL palatable. Keep in mind that many spammers use 302 redirects to fool search engines. So be judicious in your use of them.
  3. Redirection: 303 – In contrast to the 301 and 302 redirects, the 303 redirect is not used for making a substitute reference for the originally requested URL. This status code is used for the redirection of web applications to a new URL, particularly after an http post has been performed. This response indicates that the correct response can be found under a different URL and should be retrieved using a GET method. The specified URL is not a substitute reference for the original resource.
  4. Gone status code: 410 – It indicates that the page has been removed and the URL is permanently unavailable. The 410 error also indicates that the Web server has no forwarding address for the URL, so can provide no redirection to the new Web server. This condition should generally be considered permanent. If the Web server does not know, or has no way of knowing, whether or not the condition is permanent, the status code 404-Not Found should be used instead.

Bounce Rate Demystified

Bounce rate is the important metric for the website owners. It is the percentage of the visitors that are bouncing away after viewing single page of your website rather than visiting the internal pages of the website. A bounce can occur for several reasons, including:

  • By clicking on back button of browser
  • If visitor clicks on the external links
  • If visitor closes the browser window
  • If visitor types new URL on his browser
  • If visitor does not find relevent information on a page
  • Session timeout

The formula to calculate the bounce rate on your website is:
Bounce Rate = (Total number of visitors viewing one page only/total number of visits)

The bounce rate can be used to determine the effectiveness or preformance of the entry page of the website. The following are the tips to improve the bounce rate:

  • Maintain the top rankings to branded terms.
  • Provide relevant content on a page.
  • Build a clear navigation path/menu.
  • Link to a glossary page that defined industry terms.
  • Place search function prominently
  • Speed up pageload using Google Page Speed plugin
  • Get rid of pop-up ads
  • Reduce external links(or have them open in a new window)

Search Engine Indexing

The search engine indexing is the process of collection the information of the website into the search engine database. During the crawling process the search engines maintain a copy of all the contents found on the webpage and store it in an index for easy retrieval. This process hence makes the search fast. Every search engine have its own spiders to carry out the indexing process during which the search engine spiders goes through checking of the web pages where it finds the home page of each site and collects the following information:

  • checks the header section of the page.
  • reads the page content.
  • finds and follows the links.

When the spider finishes its check, it returns home carrying all the details about the website. This data is collected by the search engine’s database. The page content is analysed and the list of words and phrases along with the pages is built. The search engine’s indexing system index these web pages and save the indexed data on the storage space. When the user performs any search on the search engine, the words they entered in the search box are compared with the indexed information in the search engine’s database and the list of web pages it feels are most relevant to the search are returned. Hence this process makes the search fast. The indexed pages on the search engine increases the volume of traffic to your website. Content is considered to be the king in the world of internet. Therefore the content of the website should be informative and upto date. It is always to have original content on a website which is informative and accurate. Visitors will spend time on the website or webpage if the content is more informative and more attractive than other website. Repeatedly adding new content to the website will always attract visitors and search engines.

Follow the 4 steps mentioned below to optimize the content:

  • Heading Tags: These tags are used to specify the visitors and search engines about the topic of a page is talking about. These are the most important factor for onpage Search Engine Optimization(SEO). There are 6 header tags ranging from <H1> to <H6>. By default these tags appears larger than the standard text in a browser and are bold. These header tags should not be used twice in a single page and never use Cascading Style Sheets(CSS) to mask heading tags.
  • Special Text: Special text is any content on your page that is set to stand out from the rest of the content. The special text is given weight higher than the rest of the text on the page. It can be set as bold, underlined, colored, highlighted, sizing and italic. Search engines are programmed to read this as most important than rest of the content. Always consider not more than 30 – 40 % of the keyword density in the special text.
  • Inline Text Links: These are those links, which are placed in the middle of the text in the verbiage of your content. These links are important because it save space on your website. These are like special characters which serves 2 purposes. First it helps the reader to find the information quickly and easily. Secondly it gives an added weight to the phrases or keywords linked to that page.
  • Keyword Density: Keyword density is the percentage of time a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. In the context of SEO keyword density can be used as a factor in determining whether a web page is relevant to a specified keyword or keyword phrase. The recommended keyword density is between 4% to 10%.

It is always better to do keyword research to find which keywords are most used in search engine with relevance to your page.

URL Optimization

One of the most important optimization techinique for search engine optimization is URL optimization. If we make it simple for search engines to crawl and index the site pages, it will result in higher ranking in Search Engine Resulting Positions (SERPs). Navigation and URL are the main factor which helps search engine to crawl and index pages. Thats why URL optimization is very important. Another important factor to increase ranking in SERPs is the use of appropriate keyword in URL.

There are two types of URLs

  • Dynamic URL: These URLs rely on variable strings and are usually longer and include question marks and ampersands. Google may find difficulty in understanding these symbols.
  • Static URL: These URLs doesn’t rely on variable strings. These URLs have higher click-through rates in the SERPs, emails, web pages, etc. and have higher keyword prominence and relevancy.
  • Tips to optimize URL:
    1. For opmtizing the URLs we must limit the length of domain and filename. We should limit the use of special characters in the query string.
    2. Shorter the URL, higher is the keyword density and better will be the ranking on the SERPs.
    3. The Search engine treats www and non-www URLs as different pages in their index. So they typically see http://domain.tld and http://www.domain.tld as two different pages which will rank them seperately. Thus the PageRank will split up between the two pages. We call this as a www/non-www canonical issue. Every page on the site should have single URL which is called canonical(preferred) URL and all other non-canonical URLs that can be used to render the same age should be 301 redirected to the canonical URL. So in above example if we choose http://www.domain.tld as canonical URL and 301 redirect http://domain.tld(non-canonical /version with no www) to the canonical URL. Google will then remove the non-canonical URL from their index.
